Occupation: Acting Senior Physiotherapist at Hedland Health Campus.
What are your professional interests/specialties?
Working at Hedland Health Campus you need to be a generalist as every day is different and you can’t be sure what is going to walk through the door. We treat inpatients, outpatients, complete home visits in the community and run regional outreach programs across the Pilbara. I have a special interest in educating communities about ‘wet cough’ and preventing chronic lung conditions.
Tell us, where are you from and how did you get to be a Physiotherapist in the Pilbara region?
I am from Perth originally. In my 4th year, I completed a placement in Kununurra in which I found my passion for working rurally and being up North. I applied on the job.wa.gov website for Western Australia Country Health Service.
What do you love about the Pilbara?
I love the red dirt, it gets everywhere but it also means you must be having a good adventure. The community I live in is the best part, really makes you feel as if you are part of something and there is always someone to help you out if you get a bit stuck. There is a new spot to explore every weekend and most of all the sun is pretty much always shining!
Did you always want to be a Physiotherapist Why?
I have a huge passion for working with the Indigenous population and ensuring they receive equal opportunities in our healthcare system. I am passionate about getting patients back on their feet and returning to baseline, ensuring they are adequately set-up in the community with enough support. Working in the Pilbara has allowed me to achieve this.
What are your passions?
Volunteering! I am the Hedland Project Officer for Fair Game which I was able to get off the ground running last year. Every Monday night we run sports activities with other volunteers (basically my friends I have recruited) for the local indigenous kids. We are able to run ‘Game on’ sessions where I am able to use principles of physiotherapy to teach kids healthy habits and lifestyle choices.
When you aren’t working, where will we find you?
Camping, playing every other social sport, having cheese boards on my new tinny.
