Byron Klein

Occupation: Optometrist

What are your professional interests/specialties?
I am interested in the therapeutic care of the eyes. I enjoy helping people with red and sore eyes whether it be from an auto-immune disease, allergy, infection, or foreign bodies.

Tell us, where are you from and how did you get to be an Optometrist in the Pilbara region?
I grew up on a farm in South Australia but am originally from the northwest of WA. I was prompted to come back to the Pilbara region as an optometrist after completing a placement with Lions Outback Vision in 2016.

What do you love about the Pilbara?
I love the people of the Pilbara – there are plenty of characters and people are relaxed, friendly and welcoming. Being from a farm (and a big kid at heart), I also enjoy being immersed in the mining industry and love watching helicopters, ships and trucks.

Did you always want to be an Optometrist? Why?
As a young kid, I experienced blunt trauma to my left eye (courtesy of my brother) and I had to see the ophthalmologist and optometrist regularly for a while which gave me some exposure to the profession. I enjoy talking to people and I love science, so when it came to choosing a career path after school, optometry seemed like a great choice.

What are your passions?
I’m passionate about aviation and would like to learn to fly at some point.

When you aren’t working, where will we find you?
Spending time with my wife and three-month-old son.
