Sharon Sewell

Occupation: Quality Improvement Coach.

What are your professional interests/specialities?
My original profession was as a pharmacist. I am still registered but no longer practicing. My current role is with WA Primary Health Alliance as a QI Coach. I work with practices to use their data to implement improved processes with the aim to achieve enhanced outcomes for their patients. I love working with data and observing the picture it can paint, and guiding people (organisations) on how to make better use of their data.

Tell us, where are you from and how did you get to be a pharmacist/QI coach in the Pilbara region?
I am originally from the south metro area of Perth. As soon as I qualified as a pharmacist, I was given the opportunity via a colleague to come and work in Karratha. As with most people, I planned to stay for a short time (1 year) and here I am almost 34 years later! My switch to working for WAPHA 7 years ago has been a most rewarding one and I have held several roles during this time. It has taught me about the complexities of the overall health system and the importance of the context of place. The best part of this job is supporting and meeting some amazing health professionals… despite sometimes difficult circumstances our health professionals just ‘get on with it’ and do their utmost to help their patients.

What do you love about the Pilbara?
The great outdoors! The freedom our kids have, the stunning night sky, amazing sunsets, the untouched landscapes, the Dampier Archipelago, laid-back people, minimal traffic … need I go on??

Did you always want to be a pharmacist/QI coach? Why?
Probably… I enjoyed chemistry at school and was interested in how the body and medicines worked and being able to offer people help and advice in dealing with their health issues was an attraction. My current role still allows me to help people and use my health knowledge but now I am more behind the scenes.

What are your passions?
Travelling and sport.

When you aren’t working, where will we find you?
At our shack on Malus Island, camping or watching footy or cricket.
