SUMMARY:Short Mental Health Interventions: Implementing digital CBT-iTools
DESCRIPTION:Half of all mental illnesses start during early high school by 14 years. At this critical stage of development\, 40% of teens will experience significant sleep problems\, which can heighten their risk of developing anxiety or depression in the future. By addressing ways to get high quality sleep\, we set the foundations to promote emotional\, social and physical wellbeing and academic performance\, now and in the future. Despite this\, sleep can often be overlooked as an essential factor in optimal mental health. \n  \nJoin us as we explore the impact of sleep on young people and how you can use a digitally delivered CBT – iTool to support you in clinical practice. \n*General Practice Health of the Nation report\, RACGP\, 2021 \nFacilitator: \n• Dr Jan Orman \nGuest \n• Dr Sophie Li \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nAccreditation\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCertificates provided on completion for professionals to claim CPD points \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nSuitable for\n\nAllied Health\, Counsellors\, GP Registrars\, GPs \n\n\n\n \n\n\nLearning Objectives\n\n\n\n\n\n\n• Demonstrate an understanding of Sleep Ninja\, a digital CBT-I intervention for young people with insomnia/sleep disturbance. \n· Identify patients/clients in their practice who may benefit from using the app \n· Describe ways to introduce the appointment into clinical practice \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Diagnosis and Treatment of PTSD in Emergency Service Workers
DESCRIPTION:Duration\n3 hrs \n\n\n \n\n\nProgram Outline\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNOTE: All times listed are AEDT/AEST \nGPs often play a central role in the provision of healthcare to communities in the immediate\, acute phase of emergency situations\, and on an ongoing basis for the long-term recovery of individuals and their broader community. \n  \nEmergency Service Workers are one of the high-risk groups for trauma exposure and are more vulnerable to developing mental health problems. These mental health conditions have significant impact on their employment\, family/relationships\, and wellbeing. \n  \nThis workshop has been designed with a focus on GPs\, to diagnose patients with acute stress disorder\, post-traumatic stress disorder and other comorbidities. Evidence based guidelines will be used as the foundation to appropriately diagnose and identify treatment pathways including recommended referrals\, trauma focused psychological therapy and psychological first aid to help support their management of emergency service workers. The training may also be relevant to other health professionals. \n  \nThis training aims to increase participants’ skills and confidence to: \n1.   Understand the relationship between traumatic events and the development of mental health conditions \n2.   Identify evidence-based treatment and referral pathways for a patient impacted by trauma \n3.   Recommend evidence-based resources\, including e-Mental Health\, for family/kinship groups impacted by trauma \nTESTIMONIALS \n\n“The experience of trauma in our community has been very widespread and deeply felt over the past 12 or so months\, with the 2019-2020 summer bushfires and then the COVID pandemic. This program is excellent for both reviewing skills and knowledge and also up-skilling the varied health professionals who are often the frontline contacts for support from emergency and other workers and their families experiencing symptoms of PTSD. It has been\, for me\, one of the most valuable 3 hours of clinical training I have participated in.” Participant 2nd March 2021\n“This was great course\, especially for a rural based GP. I would strongly recommend all my colleagues to enrol in it.” Participant 11th March 2021\n“This was an excellent course\, very well delivered and relevant to general practice. It is especially relevant in the present times of floods\, fires and COVID!” Participant 25th March 2021\n\nFUNDING FOR THIS PROGRAM \nThe Grant Program for Emergency Services Workers trauma Care\, including PTSD support services\, is funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs. \nhttps://minister.homeaffairs.gov.au/davidlittleproud/Pages/mental-health-grants-support-emergency-services-workers.aspx \nSELF-CARE NOTE \nThis workshop discusses PTSD and trauma. SUMMARY:Short Mental Health Interventions: Journalling for good mental health
DESCRIPTION:Many people find writing and journalling very helpful for maintaining good mental health and even to help them through a difficult time. How do we encourage the people we see to give it a try? Join our facilitators as they discuss some of the research to support the idea of writing for good mental health and their own clinical experience. \nMental health is the number one reason people see their GPs*\, yet GPs are time poor and wait times to see psychologists are long. The need for mental health care is growing faster than specialised support and services are\, leaving a gap in patient care. This webinar series aims to provide GPs and other health professionals with skills to ‘fill the gap’ in providing mental health care to their patients using a range of brief interventions. Each webinar will be a discussion about the specific intervention and tips on how to use it effectively with your patients. How do we treat family and friends? What are the things to look out for\, what are the barriers and possible solutions for success. *General Practice Health of the Nation report\, RACGP\, 2021. \nFacilitator: \n• Dr Jan Orman \nGuest \n• Dr Phoebe Holdenson-Kimura \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nAccreditation\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCertificates provided on completion for professionals to claim CPD points\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nSuitable for\n\nAllied Health\, Counsellors\, GP Registrars\, GPs \n\n\n\n \n\n\nLearning Objectives\n\n\n\n\n\n\n• Develop an understanding of specific mental health management strategies \n• Hear about how other health professionals use the strategy in their practice and integrate it into their daily workflows \n• Develop ideas on how to apply the strategy in practice \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
