SUMMARY:Chemotherapy: Supporting patients in their cancer treatment (9550) | Online
DESCRIPTION:Overview: \nAll chemotherapy side effects can lead to delays or cessation of treatment. Prompt management or prevention of side effects leads to improved patient outcomes. Chemotherapy side effects are influenced by factors such as the drug regimen\, stage of disease\, and a patient’s co-morbidities and psychosocial status. \nAt this webinar\, Dr Andrew Fantoni\, Medical Oncologist will discuss strategies to support patients receiving chemotherapy including how to recognise and manage both acute and late side effects in general practice and how to determine when a specialised approach is required. He will also cover the decision-making process guiding the treating team in selecting appropriate chemotherapy (not specific regimens)\, providing valuable insights to help GPs address patient queries. \nDate and Time: Thursday 7 March 2024 | 7.00pm-8.00pm AWST \nLearning outcomes: \n· Describe the most common side effects of chemotherapy including how they are best managed in general practice \n· Identify when to refer a patient back to their specialist for consultation \n· Summarise the decision-making process guiding the treating team in selecting the most appropriate chemotherapy for the patient. \nPresenter: \n· Dr Andrew Fantoni\, Medical Oncologist\, Fiona Stanley Hospital \nThis activity has been accredited under ACRRM PDP\, and the RACGP CPD Program – Activity ID: 756777 \n

SUMMARY:Breast density - what does it mean for GPs and their patients?
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nMammographic breast density can be a challenge for general practitioners (GPs) and their patients. High mammographic breast density lowers the sensitivity of breast cancer screening; thereby increasing the risk of an interval cancer between screening episodes\, and moderately increases breast cancer risk. Breast Screen WA is the only Australian state screening program to notify women and their GP when a mammogram shows marked increased breast density (and have been doing so for over 10 years). Women are advised in writing to consult their GP to discuss the significance of their breast density\, to have a clinical examination and receive further advice about their breast cancer risk. \nAt this webinar\, Associate Professor Jennifer Stone will discuss the significance of breast density\, its occurrence\, how to discuss the implications of increased breast density with patients\, and the way forward. \nLearning outcomes\nDiscuss the implications of increased breast density with patients\nDescribe how breast density influences breast cancer risk and\nmammographic sensitivity\nState the supplemental screening recommendations indicated for\npatients with increased breast density\nRecall the ongoing breast density research in Australia \nPresenter\nAssociate Professor Jennifer Stone\, Epidemiologist & Senior ResearchFellow\, University of Western Australia \nRegister HERE. \nDate: Tuesday\, 25 October 2022\nTime: 7.00pm – 8.00pm\nTarget Audience: GPs\, Practice Nurses\nMode of delivery: Zoom. On the morning of the webinar an email will be sent to registered attendees which will contain a link to join the webinar.

SUMMARY:Getting to the bottom of colonoscopy use in bowel screening
DESCRIPTION:This is a free webinar and CPD opportunity for all general practice health professionals. \nEncouragement and support by GPs and practice nurses\, can have significant impact on improving participation in bowel cancer screening; evidence shows that a recommendation by a trusted health professional is a key motivator to participate. General practice health professionals have several important roles in the NBCSP\, including encouraging and supporting participation\, managing participants who have a positive FOBT\, providing information about referrals to the NBCSP\, and managing individuals who\, by way of symptom(s) or significant family history\, require diagnostic investigations or targeted surveillance rather than screening. \nIn this three-part webinar series\, an array of experts from across Australia will present on various topics related to bowel cancer screening\, including the latest research on those who do not screen and why; the National Bowel Cancer Screening program; and the importance of the appropriate use of colonoscopy . Part three\, Gastroenterologist Dr Hooi Ee will discuss the appropriate use of colonoscopies including when to start and stop surveillance for patients; how to communicate the benefits and risk to patients\, and when to refer a patient back to the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program after a colonoscopy. \nOn the morning of Tuesday 6 September an email will be sent to registered attendees which will contain a link to join the webinar. You will be able to join the webinar by clicking the link. Please note time the webinar will start at 6.00pm AWST\, 7.30pm ACST\, and 8.00pm AEST. \n5 minutes – Welcome and introductions \n40 minutes – Presentations \n\nDr Hooi Ee – Gastroenterologist & Head of Department\, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital\n\n15 minutes – Questions & discussion \n  \nLearning outcomes \n\nRecall how to communicate with patients the harm-to-benefit ratio of using colonoscopy for screening in average-risk populations\nDescribe the appropriate use of surveillance colonoscopies including when they should be initiated and ceased.\nIdentify when a patient who has had a colonoscopy can be referred back to the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program\n\n\nThis activity is pending accreditation under ACRRM PDP\, and the RACGP CPD Program – Activity ID: 362240 \nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:Mindfulness Based Compassion Training for Health Professionals - 6 Week Online Program
DESCRIPTION:This is a 6 week online program\, running from the 15th of April to the 20th of May\, on Thursday evenings from 5pm to 6:30pm. \nHealth professionals routinely give compassionate care to patients but can struggle to receive compassion or offer it to self or colleagues. Research suggests health professionals can increase wellbeing when practicing self-compassion\, and therefore increase capacity to provide optimal patient care. A recent evaluation by Curtin University also found that participation in this program could decrease levels of anxiety\, compassion fatigue and emotional exhaustion. \nTickets are $95 and can be purchased at \nSee the event flyer
