SUMMARY:Bowel cancer screening – from the GP perspective
DESCRIPTION:This is a free webinar and CPD opportunity for all general practice health professionals. \nEncouragement and support by GPs and practice nurses\, can have significant impact on improving participation in bowel cancer screening; evidence shows that a recommendation by a trusted health professional is a key motivator to participate. General practice health professionals have several important roles in the NBCSP\, including encouraging and supporting participation\, managing participants who have a positive FOBT\, providing information about referrals to the NBCSP\, and managing individuals who\, by way of symptom(s) or significant family history\, require diagnostic investigations or targeted surveillance rather than screening. \nIn this three-part webinar series\, an array of experts from across Australia will present on various topics related to bowel cancer screening\, including the latest research on those who do not screen and why; the National Bowel Cancer Screening program; and the importance of the appropriate use of colonoscopy . Part two will address the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program\, including the efficacy of the FOBT in average risk populations\, advice on answering questions around age eligibility and appropriate management of patients with a family history of bowel cancer; and case studies addressing challenging patients’ cases and how they can be managed. \nOn the morning of Wednesday 31 August an email will be sent to registered attendees which will contain a link to join the webinar. You will be able to join the webinar by clicking the link. Please note time the webinar will start at 6.00pm AWST\, 7.30pm ACST\, and 8.00pm AEST. \n5 minutes – Welcome and introductions \n40 minutes – Presentations \n\nProfessor Jon Emery- General Practitioner & Herman Professor of Primary Care Cancer Research\, University of Melbourne\nProfessor Mark Jenkins – Epidemiologist & Director of the Centre for Epidemiology and Biostatistics\, University of Melbourne.\n\n15 minutes – Questions & discussion \n  \nLearning outcomes \n\nState the efficacy of the iFOBT as a tool for screening average risk population\nSummarise the current screening strategies for people with a family history of bowel cancer\nDescribe the appropriate management of the difficult patient cases presented\n\nThis activity is pending accreditation under ACRRM PDP\, and the RACGP CPD Program – Activity ID: 362240 \nRegister HERE.

SUMMARY:Getting to the bottom of colonoscopy use in bowel screening
Part three\, Gastroenterologist Dr Hooi Ee will discuss the appropriate use of colonoscopies including when to start and stop surveillance for patients; how to communicate the benefits and risk to patients\, and when to refer a patient back to the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program after a colonoscopy. \nOn the morning of Tuesday 6 September an email will be sent to registered attendees which will contain a link to join the webinar. You will be able to join the webinar by clicking the link. Please note time the webinar will start at 6.00pm AWST\, 7.30pm ACST\, and 8.00pm AEST. \n5 minutes – Welcome and introductions \n40 minutes – Presentations \n\nDr Hooi Ee – Gastroenterologist & Head of Department\, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital\n\n15 minutes – Questions & discussion \n  \nLearning outcomes \n\nRecall how to communicate with patients the harm-to-benefit ratio of using colonoscopy for screening in average-risk populations\nDescribe the appropriate use of surveillance colonoscopies including when they should be initiated and ceased.\nIdentify when a patient who has had a colonoscopy can be referred back to the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program\n\n\nThis activity is pending accreditation under ACRRM PDP\, and the RACGP CPD Program – Activity ID: 362240 \nRegister HERE.
