SUMMARY:Caring for parents and children after domestic and family violence (online)
DESCRIPTION:A short webinar providing evidence-based knowledge and interventions that focus on repairing the parent-child relationship.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\nBecoming a parent is a stressful developmental phase and can be made significantly harder in the context of domestic and family violence trauma. Women’s agency and confidence as a mother may be directly undermined by her partner through tactics of coercive control\, impacting her experience of motherhood and the quality of mother–child relationships. \n\n\nChildren’s mental health\, wellbeing and the relationships that they depend upon for their development are all impacted by domestic and family violence. \nFamily separations after domestic and family violence are also particularly fraught for women and children and often complicated by ongoing patterns of coercive control and physical dangers\, including fatality risks to women and children. Therefore\, even when protective steps are taken by mothers\, ongoing psychosocial stressors from men’s use of violence may continue to undermine mother–child relational recovery. \nThis short webinar will provide evidence-based knowledge and interventions that focus on supporting the recovery of the parent-child relationship. It is suitable for professionals working alongside mothers and children who are\, or have\, experienced domestic and family violence. \nThis short webinar will cover: \no Trauma and effects on empathy and attachment relationships \no Maladaptive parental coping strategies following domestic and family violence \no Implications for parent-child relationship \no Consequences for child development/behaviour \no Transference and projection by domestic and family violence victim-survivor towards children \no Brief description of research-based interventions and strategies to support the recovery of the parent-child relationship \nThere will be an opportunity for questions and answers. \nHandouts and supporting literature will be provided at the end of the workshop. \nDetails \nOnline Webinar \nDate: Wednesday\, 18th May 2022 \nTime: 9:30am to 11:00am \nCost: $10 \nA link to Microsoft Teams will be emailed to participants upon registration. \nPresented by: Stephanie Rea\, Early Years Consultant\, 360 Family Health \nStephanie has had a 30 year career in nutrition and community health and wellbeing in both WA and the UK. She spent 10 years facilitating birth preparation classes for expectant parents through their journey leading up to the birth of their child and the stages of post natal life with a new baby. For the past 15 years\, Stephanie has worked for Ngala and Communicare in the areas of education and family support. She has facilitated many workshops on topics such as child development\, family relationships\, effects of trauma and impacts on brain development and attachment. Stephanie also runs her own consultancy business providing bespoke health and wellbeing workshops.

SUMMARY:National Palliative Care Week
DESCRIPTION:National Palliative Care Week provides us all with great opportunities to educate people on what palliative care involves and to raise awareness of its benefits\, as well as celebrate the excellent work done every day in our sector. The theme for this year’s week has been announced by Palliative Care Australia as “It’s your right”. This theme aims to raise awareness on the right of all Australians to access high quality palliative care when and where they need it. \nAs in previous years Palliative Care Australia is producing and supplying a range of resources for us all to use at events and activities held during the week or later in the year. This year they have prioritised sustainability by choosing resources that can be used multiple times and/or can be recycled. We have reusable tote bags\, packets of post-it notes\, pens\, packets of seedlings and microfibre lens cloths. \nTo order your resources please click here. \nOrders need to be submitted by Friday 25 March. Please note that while we will endeavour to meet all requested resources\, what we end up supplying to you will reflect the cumulative orders and availability of stock. If you have any queries please contact us at info@palliativecarewa.asn.au.

SUMMARY:Foundational Understanding of Intimate Partner Sexual Violence (Online)
DESCRIPTION:This is a foundational professional development workshop tailored for practitioners in the domestic\, family and sexual assault sectors.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\nIntimate partner sexual violence (IPSV) is a tactic of domestic violence (DV). IPSV is the intentional perpetration of sexual acts without consent in intimate relationships (including cohabiting and non-cohabiting partners\, as well as boyfriends\, girlfriends and dates). It includes sex obtained by physical force or psychological/emotional coercion or any unwanted\, painful or humiliating sexual acts. IPSV also includes tactics used to control decisions around reproduction\, and can include image-based abuse or forced watching of pornography. \n\n\nIPSV is a significant indicator of escalating frequency and severity of DV. Studies of IPSV show higher incidences of threats to kill an intimate partner than in other abusive relationships. IPSV also puts someone at a much higher risk of being killed\, particularly if they are also being physically assaulted. \nProviding freely given consent for sexual activity within the context of the perpetration of DV\, is\, arguably\, not possible. This is because the perpetration of DV creates a climate of ongoing fear or control. Research suggests that people experiencing DV cannot safely negotiate contraception or sex and may submit to sex to prevent the escalation of physical violence. \nDFV and sexual assault services and responses are often separate and underpinned by different funding models\, mandates\, goals and practice frameworks. As IPSV victims or survivors present with intersecting issues and diverse needs\, both types of services report IPSV as a particularly challenging issue which increases the complexity of providing appropriate service responses. \nStudies have shown a lack of attention to IPSV in both DFV and sexual assault services\, with some workers in DFV and sexual assault services feeling that IPSV is more compatible with the work of those in the other field. Consequently\, women experiencing IPSV are often not accessing the most appropriate support to enhance their safety\, wellbeing and recovery. \nThis workshop will familiarise practitioners with the nature and dynamics of sexual violence within relationships. Participants will learn of the institutional\, social and economic structures\, and social and cultural norms that are the conditions of IPSV. Participants will also be introduced to potential approaches to improve help-seeking for women experiencing IPSV and be provided with a variety of practice strategies to help professionals support their clients. \nDetails: \nOnline event. A link will be emailed to all participants upon registration. \nDate: Friday\, 27th May 2022 \nTime: 9:30 – 11:30am \nCost $10 \nLearning Objectives: \no Define the nature and dynamics of sexual violence within relationships \no Identify common issues and impacts for women experiencing intimate partner sexual violence to inform support and referral to appropriate services \no Explore potential approaches to improve help seeking for women experiencing intimate partner sexual violence \no Apply a variety of practice strategies to support clients experiencing intimate partner sexual violence \nWill we cover: \no Myths and dynamics of sexual violence within relationships \no Guidance on “how to ask” sensitively and building trust \no Specific effects and health consequences of IPSV \no How best to manage victims’/survivors’ safety \no Consider IPSV specifically in all risk assessment and safety management processes and practices as part of DFV risk assessment\, and ask separately about IPSV (as distinct from physical abuse); while maintaining sensitivity to diverse communities \no Challenges with reporting to police and the justice system \no Supports for victim-survivors experiencing IPSV \nWho should attend? \nThis workshop is suitable for practitioners working in the domestic\, family or sexual violence sectors. \nAbout the facilitators \nThis training will be delivered by Daphne White and Micaela Rafal from the Centre for Women’s Safety and Wellbeing (CWSW)\, Perth. \nDaphne White \nDaphne White is the Practice Development Specialist at the Centre for Women’s Safety and Wellbeing (CWSW). She is a qualified professional with over 12 years of experience as a leader and practitioner in the family\, domestic and sexual violence sector. She provides professional learning and consultancy across a wide range of areas and topics\, however her primary work is around high risk and harm in domestic\, family and sexual violence. \nMicaela Rafel \nMicaela Rafel is the Sexual Violence Project Officer at the Centre for Women’s Safety and Wellbeing. She has a background in community engagement and education within the sexual violence sector and is currently working in advocacy within her role at CWSW.
