Occupation
Community Nurse at the Newman Neighbourhood Centre.

What are your professional interests/specialities?
Previously I have worked in ICU, NICU, ED and Air Retrieval. Moving to Newman I decided to have a directional change whilst remaining within my profession. I am enjoying the primary health care setting working as the community nurse at the Newman Neighbourhood Centre. The community nurse role is still developing and evolving to suit community needs. I currently facilitate a new parents group and will be adding baby massage courses and other programs to follow. The upside of this is my increasing awareness of what is available in our health network for referrals and community networking. I would love to hear from other community nurses in the Pilbara for ideas on what they offer to their communities.

Tell us, where are you from and how did you get to be a community nurse in the Pilbara region?
Born raised and trained in New Zealand, I have worked in regional NZ and rural and regional Australia as well as tertiary hospitals in NZ, UK, and Perth. We moved to Newman from Perth at Christmas time when my partner commenced an electrical apprenticeship with BHP.

What do you love about the Pilbara?
Having grown up in a small town in NZ I appreciate the Community feel of Newman and the two-minute commute to most places in town. It is a real bonus that we live with Karijini National Park on our doorstep. Living in Newman I am grateful for the flexibility that some workplaces offer families, giving them the opportunity to try new career paths or the opportunity to work family-friendly hours. Big cities could learn a lot from the Pilbara.

What are your passions?
I enjoy working as a nurse and the diversity that the profession has. When it is not too hot, I look forward to walks and the rugged beauty of the Pilbara landscape. However, I will always look forward to being close to the ocean.

When you aren’t working, where will we find you?
Probably with my family, hopefully on holiday or just going for a walk.
